Wednesday Hodgepodge - 3/20

1. March 20th is the first day of spring...is she a lion or a lamb in your part of the world?

A very cold lamb?  Right now, it's sunny out but I had to scrape ice off my windshield.  I am ready for at least slightly warmer weather.

2. What's the most dreaded task on your spring clean to-do list?  Do you have a 'plan of attack'?

If you saw my house right now, you'd realize I'm not kidding when I say the first item should probably be "Buy bulldozer!"  The musical has not been good for my marginal cleaning skills.

3. Peas...love 'em or hate 'em?  What's a favorite dish you make using peas?

Love 'em!  I make a pasta dish with peas and other veggies in it and it's one of my favorite things.

4.  Do you feel under appreciated?

I'm a teacher in a public school system.  So, yes.

5. Have you been using Google Reader?  If so, what are you switching to now that GR has announced retirement?  If not, how do you read your favorite blogs?

I haven't been using Google reader.  I pretty much just read blogs off my blog roll or from bookmarks.  Is that bad?  Was I supposed to have a reader all along?  Thanks, Google, for leaving me with nothing but questions.

6. Anne Bradstreet is credited with the following quote~

"If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant;  if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome."

Agree or Disagree?  Why?

First of all, I love Anne Bradstreet.  I teach "To My Dear and Loving Husband" every year.  But as to the quote, I think that she's right.  If you don't have hard times, the good don't feel nearly as good.  Even though it rarely feels that way when you are dealing with the hard times.

7.  When did you last 'spring for something'?  What was it?

I have really been trying to be careful with my money.  And if you know me, you know how crazy difficult that is for me.  I am a lavisher of gifts for others and for myself.  That said, I got a pretty nice haul at Sephora on our little jaunt to the big city a couple weeks ago!

8.  Insert your own random thought here?

This musical stuff is exhausting.  And awesome.  I will be ready for the last show to come, but I think I will miss it.  Sort of.  Good news is I won't really have much time to think about it.  Track practice starts on Monday.

  1. I never used google reader either. I'm not sure what its advantage was over the blog roll.

    1. I had it on my phone at one point because I was excited to have a smart phone and downloaded all sorts of apps. I never used it and don't have it on my new one. I think I will just stick with what I know for now, unless I need to change to something later.

    1. Marla, you have no idea what this encouragement means to me! I am so tired today and still have a long way to go. The hard work will pay off in the end, but for now, it just makes me sleepy.

  3. Hmmm, Do I use Google Reader?? Do I even know what google reader is?? lol...I usually just go thru my blog...so....hopefully, I will not be rudely surprised...

You sound busy...unfortunately being a teacher is often a thankless job..but, I am sure that you will be remembered by tons of kids.

    1. Being the kind of teacher they will remember is always my hope. I am to the point that my first batch of students are college grads, so it's fun to see what they are up to.

  4. I starting using a blog reader, as it meant I could keep track of blogs from self-hosted, blogger and LiveJournal and not just WordPress.

There was an excellent article about teachers and the impossibility of having a work-life balance in the Guardian newspaper (UK) yesterday called 'Can teachers ever have a work-life balance?' that I think you'd appreciate.

    1. I may have to look that article up, Laura Anne! I do think teachers take so much of their work home, even if it's just worrying about what your students go home to or the like. That, and I think the amount of work we truly do is so misunderstood by society.

      Thanks for stopping by!

    1. Things here are out of control. And even getting rid of things I don't need, like old clothes, isn't making much of a dent! But for now, I am too tired to even begin to deal...or care.

  6. You don't have to have a reader : ) I just like having one stop blog reading and knowing when a new post is up at a glance.

Glad you're enjoying the musical! I think many many people do appreciate teacherss, but unfortunately those loud clanging complaining parents stick out. I was a teacher. My daughter is a teacher. Teachers rock!

    1. I think it's more than just parents sometimes. Society, in general, doesn't seem to get how teaching is the easiest part of the job. And the summer off is not just spent relaxing poolside and spending the copious amounts of money they pay us.

I love teaching and can't imagine doing anything else. And am so thankful to the people who do tell me how much they appreciate what we do. And even if they didn't, if I help one kid, it's worth it. That sounds so cliche, but it's the truth.

  8. Teachers are only appreciated by their students in later years not in the now.

    1. I think that is so true! I certainly didn't appreciate all of my teachers at the time, and I really see now what they faced.

I've had a few of those moments of student appreciation, and they are pretty much the best thing ever!!
