Wednesday Hodgepodge - 3/6

1. My real life friends came through with another question this week so thank you real life friends. When you've eaten in a restaurant do you complete their comment card? Do you take online surveys highlighted at the bottom of store receipts?

I always mean to, but I forget to do it once I get home. They usually offer pretty good incentives for completing them, too!

2. The (US) ban on women in combat was lifted at the end of January. It will probably be next year before specifics are worked out, but its been reported over 200,000 front line positions will eventually open up to women.  Your thoughts?

In the type of warfare that happens today, women are on the front lines even when they aren't, because the "front lines" can be anywhere troops are.  I think that we have come to the point where saying they can't serve in combat was primarily a rule in the books, and not the reality for those in a war zone.

3.  In looking back at all the blog posts you've written, what's your favorite post title

I don't know that I really love any of them.  I'm never witty enough in the moment to come up with really funny or clever titles.  My titles are usually more about starting the conversation or capping what I'm talking about.

4. What's worse-overly permissive parents or overly protective parents?  Did your own parents lean more to the permissive or the protective category?  If you're a parent where do you fall?

I sometimes joke that if you want the worst-case scenario, talk to my mom.  She means well, but sometimes she's a little too into preparing for the worst.  I'm exactly the same way, so I get it and it doesn't really bother me anymore.   My parents were not overly protective.  I didn't ever have a curfew as long as I was truthful about where I was going and what I was doing, and I understood that even if I was out late on Saturday with friends, I would be getting up for 8:15 Mass.

5.  Candlelight-moonlight-firelight-bright lights in the big city...which one's your favorite?

My favorite is probably moonlight with lots of stars, because it just awes me how beautiful the night sky can be.  But I am pretty passionate about the other three as well.

6. Dr. Seuss's birthday was celebrated on Saturday. What's a favorite book you remember (Seuss or otherwise) from your own childhood?  Did books play an important role in your growing up years? Explain.

My parents read to me a lot.  One of my favorites was a Little Golden Book called Katie the Kitten, for obvious reasons (how cool to have your name in the title of a book, right?).  My dad read it so much he can recite it.  Books played a huge role in my childhood.  I am the only one of my siblings that seems to have inherited my parents' love for the written word.  I remember spending whole days reading as a child.  I was a big fan of The Babysitter's Club books and of the spin-offs.  (Babysitter's Little Sister featuring Karen anyone?) And thankfully, I still love to read.

7.  To quote Dr. Seuss...

"From there to here, and here to there, funny things are everywhere."
from One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish

Share something funny you've recently read, seen or heard.

Yesterday during class, a group of my 8th grade boys had me in tears laughing at their live commentary while watching The Sound of Music.   They are always a pretty funny bunch, but their dry sarcasm about the whole thing was just too much!

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

I am really trying to scrimp and save as much as I can to get some things paid off.  But I'm allowing myself a little break in the next couple of days to do something fun, and I can't wait to share about it next week!!

  1. Even though the boys are making funny comments, I'm glad you are showing your class "The Sound of Music!" It's MY favorite movie and so I feel everyone should experience it! When I found out my niece had not seen it, I ran right out and bought her the DVD.

    1. I remember it not being one of my favorites for a long time, but I watched it when it was on television this year and couldn't tear myself away. They all seem to be enjoying it, even with the commentary.

  2. Understand your view on eighth graders-when I have to teach the Diary of Anne Frank to them-nothing is serious-not to this age group anymore. Have fun!

    1. The other English class is reading The Diary of Anne Frank (my class reads the play version for our drama unit) so, I've heard all about that too! They do have a hard time taking things seriously, but I think that's part of the joy in teaching middle school.

  3. I was totally in the Babysitter's Book Club! I loved those books and had most of them in my collection at one point :) And one of my favorite things to do when I am away from the city lights is to look up at the beautiful night sky filled with starts! Happy Wednesday!

    1. I had a huge collection of them, too! A few years ago, I gave them away to a friend who is a librarian, because I still had them all and they were taking up too much space in my closet.

I love being out on my family's farm because it feels like you can see all the stars! It's just my favorite thing!

  7. I know what you mean about seeing your name in a book (and a title would be awesome). I still get excited when a character is named Tracy.

    1. Honestly, I'm not sure if I was more excited over the Katie part or the kitten part! But it is so much fun to see your name in print. Extra points if they spell it the way I spell it!

  8. It did that and was its own sort of punishment, as well. I remember on particularly miserable Easter Sunday singing in the choir. I learned that lesson like I learned many others in those years--the hard way.

  9. I loved the Babysitters Club series! And yes, I had some of the 'Karen' ones. Thanks for the reminder, I'm now so annoyed I didn't mention them in my post!
