Wednesday Hodgepodge - 5/22

1. It's National Bike Week...do you own a bicycle? When did you last ride a bike?

I don't own a bike, but I have been toying with the idea of getting one.  If my ankle/calf keeps action up, maybe that would be a better option.  I can't even begin to tell you when I last rode a bike, though.  So, I don't think a purchase is imminent.

2. What's something you learned in school that wasn't part of the curriculum?

I have always been the queen of random trivia, so I was always picking up some extra piece of information.  Of course, my second train of thought on this subject was all of the things I learned riding the school bus with a bunch of boys.  Those lessons certainly weren't part of the curriculum, but did provide a valuable glimpse into the male psyche.

3. What's a food you've never tried, but want to try? What's a food you've tried and will never try again?

I'm not a very adventurous eater.  I will often try things that I might not make for myself, particularly if someone I trust is cooking, but I can't really think of something I am just dying to try right now.  As far as a food I've tried and will not be eating again, that's probably any type of seafood.  I will eat crab in things and will eat certain kinds of fried fish fillets, but overall, I just don't like any kind of sea food.

4. Have you been more demanding on yourself lately or less? Why? Do you think that's a good trend?

This school year, I have been a little more demanding of myself just because I was teaching a lot of new material and new subjects.  Recently, I've been a little less demanding.  In fact, I am not working on anything school related until June 1.  Having a couple of weeks to just breathe has been great!

5. Who is your favorite book, movie, or TV show villain?

Oooo...such a good question!  I don't know that I have an all-time favorite, but one of my current favorites would probably be Mellie on Scandal.  I don't know that she's completely a villain, but she has done some pretty sneaky things this season.  That show is full of people who aren't completely good or bad, just gloriously ambiguous where matters of morality are involved.  Are any of you fans?

6. How concerned are you about identity theft?

I don't take any chances, and I monitor my credit carefully, but I don't know that I'm overly concerned with it.  It wouldn't be something I would want to happen to anyone, though.  Friends had it happen to them and it was a mess to get cleaned up.

7. I saw this last question on Dawn's blog a couple of week's ago and asked if I could share. Everybody hop over and say hi, but first answer this...would you rather have an ordinary home in an extraordinary place or an extraordinary home in an ordinary place?

I think I would rather have an ordinary home in an extraordinary place. Homes are great and necessary, but to be in some exotic or amazing locale would be a lot more fun for me than to have a big, fancy place.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

So far, this summer has been so much fun!  I'm trying to post a picture a day on Instagram, but I've spent time with my friends and family and just had a really good time.  I feel so relaxed I don't even mind that I'm going to have to get busy cleaning this house soon!

    1. I always have been told that teaching is like giving birth. You need the break in order to make you want to do it again. That's double when you are dealing with teenagers! :)

  2. Wish I was on summer break with you!! Maybe make getting a bike your 'thing' for the summer?

    1. I agree! Nurses need summer break too, because you all are also terribly underappreciated! (At least you will be heading to Florida soon!) I think I will probably stick to talking unless I find one in very good condition for a very good price. Have a blast on vacation!

  3. Seafood is one of my favorite things, so long as its fresh. Enjoy your hard earned summer break. I love the Instagram a day...what a fun memory book that would make when fall rolls around.

    1. I keep trying it in hopes that I will learn to love some seafood, especially when we are at the Gulf, but most of it doesn't do anything for me. I don't know if I will manage a picture every day, but I want to at least use it as a means of documenting my summer.

  4. There are so many great bad-guys in fiction, picking one is a really difficult choice!

The Instagram project sounds great; kinda like a project 365, but only the really good days.

    1. I was trying to do these pretty quickly, but I can think of many villains that I loved. I love the little glimpses into what I did on my summer vacation! (There are places where you can get them printed too, so I'm thinking about a little mural or something!)

  5. I'd love to know what you learned in your bus time glimpses into the young male psyche. Hehehe! Oh, that'd be a fun post! Happy Hodgepodge!

    1. Those long bus rides were some of my favorite jr. high and early high school memories! I still get to see those guys from time to time, and I can't help but smile. I'm also pretty good at arm wrestling, thanks to them!

  6. I'm not crazy about seafood either but if it's cooked well it can be delicious, especially if it has breading and is fried ;)

    1. Breading does help! I do enjoy a really good fish fry, but that's about it! And even then I'd rather eat the hushpuppies and fried potatoes.

  7. Good for you for taking a breather! Enjoy the time :) I'm not a fan of any kind of seafood. I avoid trying it at all costs. I only road the bus for 3 years and I am sure I learned some "valuable" life lessons on that bus!

    1. Oh, Veronica! Valuable is probably too kind. But they still make me smile after all these years. These were the same boys I also rode home from baseball and basketball games with too. At the time, they were like having a bunch of big brothers.

  8. What's summer break? ;) Glad you're having a good relaxing one though - especially after the crazy term you've had!

I'm with you on the seafood. I like fish, but not a fan of anything that looks well...like it would in the sea!

    1. When we go to the coast, I will see things that look really good, but I just don't like the taste of most of it. Oh well! I like plenty of other things, as evidenced by my wasteline!

Having a little break is necessary for the mental health of teachers. I will spend a lot of that working on things for next year, but it's nice to have downtime too.
