Day 5: My Favorite Quote (And Why)

My favorite quote is the same as the one I used last time:  "Whatever you are, be a good one."   Thanks, Abe.  But in the interest of this post, I decided that I would pick another, because I do enjoy a good quote and a one sentence post is kind of lame.

That being said, I chose this quote by George Bernard Shaw: "There are two tragedies in life.  One is to lose your heart's desire.  The other is to gain it."  I think that a lot of times we build moments up in a certain way, and when they actually come to pass, they are not what we expected.  That's not to necessarily say that it's always bad, but often just different.  Losing your heart's desire is terrible, no doubt.  But, I believe that getting what you thought you wanted and finding it wasn't worth it or wasn't really what you wanted after all is worse.  And I think we've all been there at one time or another, or at least I have.

I have quotes up all over my classroom, and nothing makes me happier when a student sees one and recalls it in a paper or a class discussion.  We remember the ones that speak to us.  I can't wait to see what everyone else has!  Make sure to link up!

  1. I completely agree with you about the Shaw quote. I drives home the importance of being careful of who you step on in getting the things you want.

I use quotes for so many things, scrapbooking, to add some affirmation to my annual written goals and I used "If the pen is mightier than the sword, then the video camera is mightier than a machine gun" in the community area and in class when I taught public access classes to inspire student to fins their voice with the public cable channel.

  2. I am a quote lover myself. The one from Shaw made my heart ache a little.
